Christmas Cruise - Manchester Christmas markets, Saturday 17th November 2018

Mooring up in our traditional spot by the Castlefield Bowl, a cold but bright day spent around the markets followed by a quiet evening in the White Lion was enjoyed by all. Breakfast in the YMCA on Sunday morning was followed by another trip around the markets (and maybe a few pubs) before setting off home in the late afternoon.

Bonfire Night Cruise - Lancashire Mining Museum, Saturday 3rd November 2018

Only two boats turned out for the bonfire and firework display at Lancashire Mining Museum. There was a lot of confusion on entry as the venue had no pay on the gate tickets available, despite assurances previously that this would be the case. A dissappointing nignt in the end.

End of Season Cruise - Sunday Lunch at The Olde Boat House, Sunday 14th October 2018

On a horrible Sunday morning for boating, four boats braved the wind and rain to cruise to the Olde Boat House for lunch. The rest of us, having whimped out of cruising, met with them for the usual high quality fare and excellent service we have come to expect from Deb and the team here. Good food, good company and a few beers. this is what Sunday was made for.

Leigh Festival, 7th - 9th September 2018

Relocated to the Leigh Miners Welfare club, this years carnival focussed more on the canal with boat traders and the historic narrowboat "George". Some travelled by road while others used the canal and all had a very nice day.

Summer Bank Holiday Cruise - Grappenhall, 25th to 27th August 2018

We are now back to the traditional British bank holiday weather, overcast and rain. It could have been worse so setting off through the drizzle on the Saturday we all met at the appointed mooring location at Grappenhall and visited the grappenhall Ex-Servicemens Club for the evening. As usual, the committee and staff of the club made us very welcome and we enjoyed a good nights with entertainment provided by talented vocalist Paul Tate, with a bit of bigo and a table top quiz thrown in for good measure.

Only 4 boats chose to stop at Lymm on the Sunday night. The weather had a lot to do with that I'm sure but those that did stop enjoyed a very pleasant night in the Bridgewater club, staying until we were forced to go home.

BBQ Night at Dunham Massey, Saturday 21st July 2018

The weather is changing now and after a wet Friday and a few showers, the rain held off for the duration. Afer clearing a space, the gazebo's were erected under the usual tree and the hardy few undertook the annual pilgrimage to The Vine, to whet the appetite with a few pints of Sam Smiths. The BBQ was fired up and a good night was had by all. Music was again provided by Uncle Monty with a short set of acoustic jamming added for variety. yet again a good turnout contributed to a great atmosphere.

Pensioners Cruise, Saturday 14th July 2018

A beautiful sunny day greeted everybody in stark contrast to the first rainfall for many weeks the previous day. It was great to see the response from Patricroft to the plea for volunteers which meant that on the day we had enough boats to accomodate our passengers. In fact due to some last minute drop outs, we had more boats than people. Its safe to say that every one of our 25 guests thouroughly enjoyed the day. After the cruise there was a splendid buffet provided by Bev, our hard working social secretary.

This sort of community event needs to be repeated to help boost our standing in the community, and more importantly, to help us maintain our CASC status.

Commodores Cruise - Bugsworth Basin, 22nd June to 8th July 2018

This year’s cruise was beset with challenges. The breach at Middlewich forcing me to cancel the proposed trip to Wolverhampton Boat Club in favour of the Cheshire ring, only to have Marple locks closed thereby cutting off the Cheshire ring. Still we set off undeterred, determined to get to Bugsworth Basin and the Peak Forest Canal.

The weather was superb throughout but the resulting shortage of water in the Peak Forest and Macclesfield canals made for slow going at times; making the short cruising days not quite so short and the longer cruising days, well a bit longer.

Safe to say the four boats that made the effort to go were rewarded with some breathtakingly magnificent scenery, sun rises, sunsets and even a glorious moonrise.

The best narrative for the trip however is in the pictures taken by our unofficial cruise photographer, Gail Walker.

BBQ Night at Pennington Flash, Saturday 9th June 2018

The wonderful weather continued for a BBQ cruise to a new location, Pennington Flash. On arrival at our chosen location we came across three boats from Sale CC who had also decided to stop there. In true boating fashion we surrounded them and forced them to join in and have a really good time, which wasn’t hard. In total 20 boats from the club turned up (plus the 3 gate crashers from SCC), for what was a great night. Thank you to everyone who turned up contributing to a wonderful atmosphere and thank you to the SCC boats for putting up with us and joining in. This will definitely be on the cruising calendar for next year.

FBCC Rally held at Sale CC, 25th to 28th May 2018

The end of May Spring Bank holiday brings us to the annual rally, this year held at Sale. The weather Gods smiled on us yet again and we had a brilliant rally. packed with fun and entertainment from beginning to end.

The cruise to Sale, though a short one, was quite windy and a wet, with many members facing a torrential downpour on the way but as always, we soldier on, hoping for better things the next day. Friday night was the traditional noggin and natter and with some varied background music we started with a good evening catching up with friends from all clubs.

Saturday brought the fine weather everyone was hoping for and, as usual, the commodores games provided the highlight of the afternoons entertainment. Unusually, most commodores managed to master the dodgy dinghy and stay out of the water however Lymm CC didn’t disappoint by sinking right at the finish. Watchouse CC were the eventual winners.

Disappointingly, the midnight sail past failed to happen as no clubs entered the illuminated boat competition.

Sunday was another fine day and the dignitaries and commodores performed the sail past and performed their judging duties. The presentations were yet another good show for Worsley, with Sonya Rose the winner of the best decorated boat and Ken Ogg, our very own Quiz Master General, winning 2 of the quizzes. We were the winners of the best attended club yet again which is a great testament to our club and its members for the support we give to the rally and the hosting club. The evening entertainment was preceded by torrential rain and a thunder storm but nothing could dampen the spirits of everyone and as the storm passes, the evenings entertainment was in full swing crowning the weekend with another superb night.

Monday was another scorching hot day and as we all said our goodbyes and started the cruise home it was noted by everyone what a great rally Sale had given us and all the hard work that Sale’s rally committee and their members had put in had really paid off.

A very big thank you to Sale CC for putting on such a brilliant weekend for us all.

May Bank Holiday Cruise - Parbold, 4th to 7th May 2018

Looking to go that little bit further than the usual cruise to Crooke Hall, we set off on the Friday evening, meeting up in Abram. Passing the now closed Dover Lock Inn we moored up further along on the opposite side to the towpath, amongst the bushes (most of which weren't there last time I checked) and we enjoyed an evening in at the Buck's Head; followed by a midnight feast, eating a take away in the Abram village club.

Saturday and blessed with lovely weather, we paired up for the locks and had a very pleasant cruise through Crooke and Apply Bridge along the Douglas Valley to Parbold. In the evening we went into the now renamed Stocks Tavern. The Stocks, is mostly geared up to the food trade however an advanced phone call ensured we were made welcome and after taking over the outside seating area for most of the evening, we adjourned inside to round off a fine evening.

A staggered start on Sunday to avoid queueing at locks saw us start the return cruise, again in glorious weather. We arrived in Poolstock as planned only to discover navigation was closed due to vandalism of the top gates on Lock 1. CRT were going to attempt repairs the following morning so faced with an enforced lie in on Monday, in true boating fashion we headed off to the pub.

After a few anxious hours waiting to see if CRT could repair the gate, we were off on Monday making the most of the sunshine to return home with everybody who attended having had a jolly good time.

Many thanks to those who helped our novice and less able boaters through the locks; and to all who made the effort to go, for contributing to a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

Easter Cruise - BMBC Runcorn, 30th March to 2nd April 2018

A Well attended cruise as usual. A good night in Stockto Heath on the way there in the Red Lion just for a change. Stockton heath seems very popular these days and everywhere was very loud but

still a very enjoyable evening. Again BMBC did us proud with an excellent night in their clubhouse on the Saturday followed by a great Sunday lunch.

We stopped at The Star in Lymm on the way home which provided a good relaxed evening in a traditional pub atmosphere. Those that attended spent the evening swapping canal tales and various boating stories in a much more quiet and relaxed setting; the perfect wind down to a great weekend.

Throughout the cruise, the weather wasn't very kind to us and most of us were very happy to get back to our own beds on Monday evening.

Shakedown Cruise - Mothers Day Lunch at The Moorings, Sunday 12th March 2018

The first cruise of the 2018 season, Mothers Day at the Moorings, saw a turn for the better as far as the weather was concerned.

A good turnout of boats ensured the season got off to a good start. In addition this created a convivial atmosphere at the Moorings where the service and quality of food lived up to the usual standard.

We now aim to build on this positive start, with members support, during the coming season when hopefully we will be blessed with the good weather we may have lacked in recent years. Happy boating for 2018.
